The Merian is named after famous 17th century naturalist and entomologist, Maria Sibylla Merian, one of the world’s first scientific illustrators. She was the first scientist to study live insects, proving their distinct development stages and metamorphosis, and conclusively linking the caterpillar and butterfly. Merian’s works finally proved that life arises from life and created a new standard for scientific accuracy, which still forms the basis for insect ecology today.
