The Jardine design is named after Sir William Jardine, one of the foremost 19th century naturalists. He issued the 40 volume The Naturalist’s Library, the most comprehensive collection of Victorian-era science, bringing together the combined knowledge of the greatest zoologists and naturalists of the time, and wrote 15 of the volumes himself. His private natural history museum and library are said to have been the finest in Britain, boasting over 6,000 species of bird alone.
